Tesamorelin

TESAMORELIN

What is Tesamorelin?

Tesamorelin is a synthetic form of a naturally occurring hormone that assists the body to stimulate the release of growth hormone (GH). It received FDA approval in 2010. It was primarily used to reduce excess abdominal fat in patients with HIV who have lipodystrophy, a common condition where fat is distributed unevenly in the body, especially around the organs. Off-label it has been used for many years by bodybuilders & others for not just cosmetic but also for metabolic benefits.

How Does Tesamorelin Work?

Tesamorelin works by mimicking the action of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), which stimulates the pituitary gland to produce and release growth hormone. The increased levels of growth hormone help to:

Reduce Visceral Fat: Decrease the amount of fat stored around the internal organs.

Improve Metabolism: Enhance overall metabolic rate, aiding in fat reduction.

Increase Muscle Mass: Support the growth & maintenance of lean muscle tissue.

Benefits of Tesamorelin

  1. Reduction in Visceral Fat:
    • Significant decrease in abdominal fat, improving body composition.
  2. Improved Lipid Profile:
    • Reduction in triglycerides and other harmful lipids.
  3. Enhanced Quality of Life:
    • Improved physical appearance and potentially increased self-esteem.
  4. Better Metabolic Health:
    • Potential reduction in insulin resistance & improvement in glucose metabolism.
  5. Lean Muscle Maintenance:
    • Helps in preserving and increasing lean muscle mass.

Possible Side Effects

While Tesamorelin is generally well-tolerated, some patients may experience side effects. Unfortunately, data on side effects that was reported was from patients who had HIV and therefore on multiple very potent medications. These can include:

Most Common Side Effects: [around 1/100 or more]

  • Redness, itching, or swelling at the injection site. Usually short-lived.
  • Muscle and joint pain.
  • Headache.
  • Nausea.

Rare but Serious Side Effects:

  • Swelling of extremities (edema).
  • Increased blood sugar levels, especially uncontrolled diabetics.
  • Hypersensitivity reactions (rash, hives).

Important Considerations

Administration: Tesamorelin is administered via subcutaneous injection, 3-5x weekly at night.

Monitoring: Regular follow-up with your healthcare provider is essential to monitor your response and any side effects.

Contraindications: Not recommended for individuals with active malignancy, those allergic to the ingredients in Tesamorelin, or those with a pituitary gland disorder.

Recommendations: Because it has been known to provide many benefits but the REDUCTION of the overall VISCERAL ADIPOSE TISSUE [VAT – the fat deposited around organs], can significantly improve your physiology. Therefore, we do recommend that patients do consider DEXA SCAN testing to monitor for BODY COMPOSITION changes.
